What's in my Coffee?!

So, I get a lot of questions about the craziness that is my morning coffee. I call it this because truly, there is no rhyme or reason to it most days - I mean I have my staples, but I am always playing with things that will elevate my morning cup.

I have to confess - and I am sure you are not surprised by this, but I have an enormous sweet tooth. I blame my Dad - who i love very much :) - but also, it is what it is & I have found amazing healthy ways to satisfy it over the years! NOW - what isn't great is that forever, I had a SERRIOOUUUSSSS obsession with fake sweeteners. Being real here - I have to tell you that I think in moderation, it is on to have these things here and there, but the truth is, if you can rid your diet of them & find alternate solutions, you will be better off. The sciencey part of fake sweeteners that makes you think twice about them is this - no they have no calories, and in fact your body doesn't process them - which is why they can give you a tummy ache - but what they do is signal to your body that something sweet is coming, and then since it's not "real" your body never fills that void or that need for the sweet thing it was then looking forward to. So the reality is, ingesting artificial sweeteners CAN possibly make us crave more sweet things. It's a little bit of a vicious cycle. BUT AGAIN - do your research and find what works for you. Here and there, I love me a splenda. I do, I am human :) BUT 90% of the time I am using alternatives to sweeten my coffee. Some also don't believe in Stevia as a good alternative, personally, it works for me - and you can see it pictured here. That's the thing about nutrition, you have to find what works for YOU. Anyways, I digress - but I want to share some of my favorite mix ins of the moment and the items that are helping me kick my cravings for that latte that I used to die forrrr :)

((PS did you know that a latte from a coffee shop can have the same amount of carbs as like 2 slices of bread!!! and if its flavored, forgettt it. stick with these babies instead.))

Coffee is such a fun vehicle to pack in some nutrients! I am a big fan of using the nutribullet to blend some of these babies into my coffee and when you do that it creates that foam on the top, so you feel like you are drinking a latte, but without all those added calories, carbs & sugars!! On a typical day I blend in collagen peptides & these days some pearl dust into my first cup of the day - I use stevia to sweeten and instead of creamer I use Rebbl Reishi Chocolate drink - its so creamy, so delicious & has some immune boosting properties to it! When that is blended together I swear to you my day just gets better - plus I get hair, skin, nails, immune system & digestive benefits AND all I taste is chocolate coffee goodness.

I wanted to share a little bit about each item below, I am not recommending all of these for you - you have to do your own research and find out if they work for you and fit your needs - these work for me, but you already know - nutrition is very personal so make sure you check them out for you first! THEN play with combos and mix ins and let me know what you think!

I asked Noelle, HSH blogger extraordinaire to hi-light some good facts about each of my favorite blend-ins - take a look and let us know what you think!

Collagen: Collagen Peptides, one of the big trends of 2018, are so versatile in that they can be added to almost any kind of liquid to enhance all kinds of features, like your hair, skin, and nails. Plus collagen peptides pack a ton of protein in a CLEAN source. A lot of protein powders add in some serious junk, these babies are clean, light and effective. Interested in buying a Collagen Peptide powder? Get a little crazy and pick a flavored option as opposed to un-flavored, this will give you that extra punch of sweetness without all the added calories. If you feel like your hair, skin, and nails are in tip-top shape, you can still choose a collagen peptide to support your gut health or even to help your muscles recover after a butt-kicking morning workout.

Brands we love: Vital Proteins, Primal Kitchen

Pearl Powder: Before hearing  Jenna’s tricks of the trade, I had no idea what Pearl Powder was or  how it could be used to help benefit me, ESPECIALLY mixing it into my coffee?! Crushed pearls have been shown to promote a better complexion AND hair growth (a factor Jenna will attest to herself). Pearl Powder on it’s own has other physical benefits to help the body function, like having effects that will help balance out your mood.

Moon Dust: Moon Dust, a product of the brand Moon Juice, is all about using natural, food-based ingredients to better the body from inside out. Moon Dust is a “superherb” mixture, with varieties that contain pearl powder to better improve your skin, as well as other options to help clear your mind and help you focus; it’s amazing to think this can all be achieved with your morning cup of coffee, isn’t it?

Jenna LOVES the Beauty Dust 💕

Rebbl: Roots, Extracts, Berries, Bark, and Leaves. See a connection? REBBL! These insane beverages come in a multitude of varieties that literally cover health benefits from A-Z. On top of that, the brand also offers fortified protein drinks that offer as much as 16 grams of beautiful, plant based protein per bottle. Having already tried these myself, I will attest to how great the flavor is, especially when added to coffee. It feels even better to know I’m sweetening my coffee with all natural, plant-based ingredients, so not only am I getting a great cup of Joe, but a healthier version of myself as well. Drop your creamer and swap in a few ounces of one of their flavors - add some immune boosting e

Maca Powder: Caffeine gives you energy, right? That jittery energy is sometimes all a person needs to get going in the morning, even though it wears off once the afternoon rolls around. If you need a kind of feel-good energy and not the morning jitters, then adding Maca Powder to your coffee could be the secret benefit your body needs. Maca Powder will naturally energize you, and also has properties that will help to you de-stressed as you move through your day. Some even show it can have positive effects on your libido too ;)

 Apres: Now, if it’s post workout, sometimes Jenna swaps out Rebbl for Apres. These plant based, creamy, protein PACKED, um and delicious, protein shakes are always in Jenna’s bag. They are coconut water based and therefore full of electrolytes - helping you hydrate while you caffeinate & re-fuel all at the same time - basically a trifecta 🙌🏼 {if you haven’t tried them yet, they are a MUST and code: Jenna15 gets you 15% off your first order!! Bulk cases now available too 💪}

That's all for now! Thanks for reading & let us know what you think!
