Two-Week Hydration Challenge 💦
As all of you who follow me on IG know, I am a big fan of Essentia Water. Essentia Water is a supercharged ionized alkaline water that’s better at rehydrating. As an RD I am obsessed with water in general and a FIRM believer in not letting my client’s slack on water intake. I teach and preach that as every single one of our cells needs water to do their jobs every day, most of our nutrition and wellness focused goals cannot and will not be met until we are fully hydrated and functioning at peak hydration DAILY. This is something that needs to be a habit first. So if you are reading this and thinking to yourself, “I don’t drink nearly enough water.” Stop reading now and go get a glass!
NOW. I also want to preface this by saying that ANY water you drink is important. And just like with frozen vs. fresh veggies – my mantra is, whatever you can get your hands on and into your body, that is what is best for you.
HOWEVER, I want to tell you about my experience with a two-week hydration challenge I just recently completed. I teamed up with the amazing team at Essentia to see how my own water intake impacted me daily. Essentially (he he see what I did there) this challenge made me so much more aware of HOW water really impacts my daily performance and routine.
By way of a daily survey, we measured how much water I drank every day, how I felt waking up every morning, how productive I felt, my energy level and my mood. Before beginning this challenge, the 3 days prior to starting I dropped my water intake to about 2 liters or less per day, I did not drink ANY Essentia and everything else in my routine was normal. The challenge was to only drink Essentia water for 2 weeks and measure the outcomes listed previously. I have to say the results are pretty cool.
But, to start let’s talk about the undeniable benefits of proper hydration and why you need to make sure your hydration is on point DAILY.
When you are properly hydrated, benefits include:
• Improved digestion (especially with a higher fiber diet, lack of proper hydration is not only important, it is imperative to maintain a healthy & happy bathroom routine – ya got me?!)
• Weight maintenance and/or weight loss
• Healthy hair, skin & nails
• Anti-aging benefits
• Muscle & joint health (lubricates our joints to help prevent injury)
• Prevents headaches
• Improved energy levels
• Water acts as a natural “detoxifier” helping your kidneys do their job to remove what you don’t need & flush it out (SO SKIP THE DETOXES PEOPLE AND DRINK SOME WATER!)
• And so many more!
Now, when it is cold outside most of us “forget” to drink enough water because we don’t feel as thirsty. When it’s hot out we associate the heat with a need to drink water, but when it’s cold a lot of times what I see in my practice is people replacing their water intake with hot beverages – coffees and lattes and seasonal things that do not hydrate us. Some RDs may also allow clients to count hot tea towards their water intake, but this RD…does not. Sorry.
So think about your day, think about your intake. Are you missing out on these benefits because of the cold weather? Are you feeling any impact from it? Sometimes we jump to associating issues to other things, when the solution really could be as simple as our water intake. Think on this one.
Ok now, let’s talk about why Essentia.
First of all, I need to tell you something so interesting that happened during this challenge period and right before it. I was in an (awesome) hot yoga class before the challenge started – during a day when I was not drinking Essentia. And I was dying of thirst and chugged almost a full bottle of water (16 oz.) I wasn’t paying attention, and truly I never recommend chugging water EVER, but I noticed I felt really bloated and burpy after doing this.
Fast forward, found myself in the same situation during a HOT HIIT class this time (also awesome and just as hot), and the bloating and burping did not happen with my Essentia. I am NOT claiming direct correlation here – but I am sharing my very real experience with you.
Ok moving on. What makes Essentia water, “over-achieving” as they state.

Essentia goes through a purification process where any water can be used & transformed into a higher pH product – which has incredible sustainability benefits. The water is then put through a 3 step purification process (which this video really does a great job showing: HERE) and then is bottled for your convenience. Personally, I purchase either the 1 liter or 1.5-liter bottles so I can easily track what I have drank and what I still need to drink. And then I ALWAYS recycle the bottles once I finish them. ((and encourage all to do the same))
On their site they also have this statement which I love and ties a lot of what I just wrote together: “the Earth’s natural resources go further with less impact on the environment. Water that benefits people and our planet. That’s the future of water.”
Essentia also has trace amounts of electrolytes infused into it that improve taste and help your bod get what it needs to hydrate efficiently & effectively. I used to think I couldn’t taste a difference, but honestly, I can. Essentially what Essentia does is gets you what you need quicker. Again, ALL water is good, Essentia is extra efficient AKA over-achieving.
Ok so the results of the challenge are really awesome.
It is important for me to also tell you that my challenge was over Thanksgiving time, I brought Essentia with me everywhere I went over the holiday weekend and every time I went out to eat during this 2 week period, Essentia was in my purse (you may have seen my BYO-E posts on IG, this was why!) My workouts were my normal routine and so was my sleep habits. Typically going to bed between 10-11:30 and up anywhere from 5-7:30 depending on the day. My average intake was a little under 3 liters daily, but what you can really see from these results & what I really felt, is that anything under 3 liters I was not functioning at 💯. This was all I needed to see to MAKE SURE every day since then I have been hitting my 3 liter mark. Because truly, WHY when we know what we need to do to feel our best would I or we do anything less than that…loaded question – apply it to everything and see what happens!
So, what I learned during this challenge, 3 liters is my sweet spot. Essentia is not only my favorite because of the reasons I’ve listed, they also are a really cool company that does really cool things.
A few months ago I actually had the opportunity to attend their ‘Fire Within’ event. It was educational about the product itself but also one of the most inspiring events I have ever been to.
Essentia gave us the chance to participate in their Believe+ campaign.
Believe+ is an initiative that Essentia launched to support underprivileged youth through partnerships with after-school organizations, like After-School All-Stars and Active Children Portland, that focus on education, health and fitness, as well as empowerment programs. At their Fire Within event, we had the opportunity to give back to the next generation of overachievers (an Essentia term that I am obsessed with) by stuffing backpacks with school supplies for the kids in the after-school programs.
Essentia celebrates overachievement and believes that everyone has a fire burning inside that pushes them to be the best version of themselves. At the event, there was also a panel discussion featuring Essentia Nation members U.S Coast Guard, Triathlon athlete, Jessica Lukasik, Australian fashion designer, Daniel Patrick, British singer/songwriter, Arlissa, and filmmaker Karam Gill. They shared stories about their journeys and talked about how they embody the journey of pushing yourself to unlock your full potential. Needless to say it solidified my love affair with the company.
